My painting is an effort to capture the moment in time. Beauty is all around us. We are constantly exposed to stunning visual stimuli. Yet, much of it goes unattended. Our Type A mindset presses us to accomplish tasks rapidly leaving us with a tendency to ignore the beauty around us. Most of these stimuli are ignored due to their fleeting nature and our task-oriented preoccupation. My paintings are about capturing the moment and suspending it during the painting process. Suspended images recorded in paint become permanent impressions preserving them for a lifetime.
Capturing and preserving these impressions is associated with light. It is really all about the light. Light illuminates and shows form and color. No light, no form. No form, no impressions. To me, the best way to capture the moment in paint is by observing form directly, from life. Thus, as much as possible, I take my impressions from objects, people and landscapes directly from life without using photography. There are times (very few) when I must work from photographic references but my strong preference is to work directly from life.
